United Calypso, Football taught by Matt Busby
The United Calypso is one of the vintage Manchester United chants that we’ve been hearing at the Stretford End for a few decades. The chant has been around since the 1950s and is dedicated to the Busby Babes. It talks about the style of Manchester United’s “Football taught by Matt Busby”.
Matt Busby was officially announced as a manager of Manchester United on the 1st October 1945 and managed the club for 24 years. He led United to a winning a total of 5 league titles, 2 FA Cups and Manchester United’s first ever European Cup in 1968. His time at Manchester United was stained by the Munich tragedy when on the way home from a European Cup match on the 6th of February 1958, the plane carrying players and club officials crashed on the runway. A total of 23 people were killed, including eight Manchester United players as a result of the tragedy. After this sad day in the history of Manchester United, Matt Busby built a new Manchester United side around the Munich survivors.
Matt Busby sadly passed away on 20 January 1994 at the age of 84.
